Eagle River is part of the Municipality of Anchorage. It is a community in the Chugach Mountains and situated on the shores of the Eagle River. Popular activities in the rugged and beautiful Alaska wilderness include abundant hiking trails, rafting, skiing, and exploring the mountains such as Mount Baldy that overlooks the town.
Chugiak-Eagle River is named as a combined community for the purposes of the Alaska Department of Labor’s rapid population growth figures. These figures doubled between 1980 and 1990 from 12,858 to 25,324. By 2000 it was 29,915, by 2010 34,982, and estimated at 35,600 in 2015. Approximately 260,283 people live in Anchorage County. Additionally, the Anchorage School District has many public, charter, and parochial schools for K-12 grades. There is also a branch of the University of Alaska Anchorage and a local bible college.
Home listings and condos for sale, according to the city data, had an estimated median value in 2015 of $169,040 compared to $75,000 in 2000. Houses for sale as well as other properties can be found on our Multiple Listing Service (MLS) and our staff of well-experienced realtors can help you with finding the perfect home.
The aforementioned Mt Baldy is a short hike with a strenuous start up the face, is pretty steep towards the top, then a stroll along a ridge, and can be finished by a long downhill to a small pond. The hike has gorgeous views up the Eagle River Valley and from the inlet to Anchorage. Or if you are looking for a one-mile walk on a well maintained trail, check out Thunderbird Falls.
The Eagle River Nature Center is inexpensive and cost about $5.00 to enter the state park. There are guided walking tours, hiking trails including a short one of only ¾ of a mile, and several observation walkways. However, watch out for bear, moose, ducks in the stream, and other wildlife. There is also Chugach State Park, which is 495,000 acres of pristine wilderness to explore.
Celebrations include the annual April Eagle River Rotary's Nerf Royale, Highland Games at the end of June, a Fourth of July celebration, and the Bear Paw Festival also in July. The Bear Paw has a parade, a Princess, Official Escort, Miss Congeniality, an award for the Best Costume with an Alaskan Theme, scholarship pageants, carnival games and rides, entertainment, and much more.
